WMS stands for “Web Map Service” and is a standard method of distributing GIS data from a single web source. There are numerous open data WMS available. OpenCities Planner can overlay WMS layers on the terrain and supports click to query the WMS for feature info. Hover the Terrain images button group and then click the WMS button.

  • Configure
Start by configuring a WMS. The configuration requires a name for the configuration and the GetCapabilities URL to the WMS. You can also add user/password ff the WMS needs user authentication.
Some WMS servers outputs the images in reverse order than OpenCities Planner expects, making the layers become textured in the wrong order. To fix this, you can check the Reverse layer order checkbox.
  • Adding layers from a WMS
When a WMS has been configured you can pick layers from it and add to your project view. Select the WMS configuration you want to use and then select New layer.
Select the layers you want to use from the Layer list. You can use the filter text field to search the list if the WMS has many layers. Multiple layers can be selected.
You can set the opacity of the result using the slider.
  • Feature info
Some WMS supports querying for data when a layer is clicked. If so, you can enable Feature info and then choose in which format the WMS responds.
  • Troubleshooting
You may experience issues with your WMS layers if the service supplier is running through an update or errors. This can result in your WMS layers not showing correctly or showing just parts of it. Read here on how to solve this.
